Congratulations Class of 2029!
Your Northwestern experience begins soon, and this is the perfect time to start thinking about housing your first year on campus! One of the best ways to connect with other new students on campus is by joining a residential college, like Shepard. We'd love for you to join our community of Sheeple! Click the button below to learn more!
Both an entertaining hub for social activities and a quiet place for study, Shepard aims to be comfortable for everybody. Typically housing 75 residents, Shepard’s dorms in South Mid Quads are located on South Campus in the Southwest Area of Northwestern. As a multi-thematic residential college, Shepard's residents possess a myriad of majors, minors, and interests—connecting engineers with music composers, coders with filmmakers, and everyone in between. Each week, the Sheep (a loving name given to Shepard residents) are supplied with a slew of social events, such as Munchies, Game Nights, Movie Nights, and Firesides. Among Shepard’s most popular events are the Fellows Barbecue, the end-of-quarter Coffeehouse, and the Shepard Formal. In addition to fostering a friendly environment, Shepard provides a place for students to interact with faculty members from various disciplines. In fact, Shepard has more fellows than any other Residential College! Lastly, every fall, Shepard offers amazing guidance for the Lambs (first-years) as they begin their new lives as Northwestern students.

Check out the Welcome Letter from our President and Faculty Chair!
Hi there, Class of 2029!!!
My name is Tallulah Sarig, and I’m the current president of Shepard Residential College, aka South Mid-Quads!!! If you’re like I was this time last year, you’re probably stalking res colleges and dorms online right now. And you may be wondering, what makes SMQ unique?
At Shepard, our goal is to foster a tight-knit community that you can fall back on while you begin to make friends and connections at college. As a residential college, we host regular variety events that you can attend to build relationships with other residents, have fun, and most importantly, get free food! Shepard is a multi-thematic residential college, which means that from your first day on campus, you'll be interacting with students and faculty from a wide variety of disciplines with a diverse range of interests (we’ve got everyone from engineers to theatre kids)! We are located in South Mid-Quads (NOT Shepard Hall, confusing I know), which is home to just under seventy-five residents. We also have numerous non-resident members, who are members of Shepard Residential College but live outside of SMQ.
Together, we make up a close-knit community that provides plenty of opportunities to develop friendships with fellow “Sheep” (that’s how we refer to ourselves in honor of our mascot, the sheep). Our small size means that you get to know everyone in a way that simply is not possible in most larger residential colleges. As someone who knew nearly no one when coming into Northwestern, this was massively meaningful to me! To this day, many of my closest friends at NU are fellow SMQ residents. Truly, nothing beats getting home at the end of a long day and being welcomed by all your friends hanging out in the common area watching a movie, cooking up a sweet treat, playing video games, getting some work done, or just chilling!
Not to mention all our amenities! Whether it be our famously good kitchen, game tables (pool table, ping pong, foosball), video game consoles (Wii, Xbox with Rock Band remotes yay, piano, TVs, printer, or, most importantly, our NICE BATHROOMS. You’ll often find sheep bringing friends over to give a tour and enjoy the welcoming space.
We’re run by an exec board that you can turn to if you have any questions, or just wanna talk! The executive board consists of a President (me), Treasurer, Communications Chair, Social Chairs, Academic Chairs, and an Outreach Chair. You can click on the “People” tab to learn a bit more about us and find contact info, or head to our Instagram page, @shepardrescollege! If you have any general questions, [email protected] is the place to go :)
In essence, I don’t know who I would be today without Shepard Res College, and I cannot recommend living in SMQ highly enough. I want to personally congratulate you on making it to Northwestern, and hope to see you around next year!

As the Faculty Chair at Shepard Residential College, it is my pleasure to welcome our newest residents, our new “sheep” to our world! I have enjoyed meeting all the current sheep and look forward to meeting our newest residents soon. Through our many community building events, firesides, and outings, you will find an inclusive and welcoming space where you can get to know not only your fellow students, but many faculty members from diverse backgrounds.
When I am not running around campus to attend a Fellows’ lunch or event, you can find me in the Middle East and North African Languages Program where I teach Arabic. It’s a smaller yet lively program filled with great events and even more amazing food. Often you will see me with a child or two (or more) accompanying me to an evening event. I am a native of Chicago and alumna of Northwestern, where I studied Economics and have very vivid memories of the fast-paced Northwestern quarter system. After working in consulting for a bit, I pursued graduate education in Near Eastern Studies and specialized in the teaching of Arabic. Since then, I have been teaching all levels of Arabic and enjoy teaching Media Arabic and the history of Arab immigration to the US. Most people are surprised that I am not a native Arabic speaker of Arabic or of Arab descent!
Shepard is located strategically close to downtown Evanston and all the nice shops, restaurants, and cafes. It’s also very easy to catch the intercampus shuttle and get to downtown Chicago. The “residential neighborhoods” on south campus also provide lots of great amenities and you will find many cool resources close by.
At Shepard, I can meet students and faculty I would never get to know and experience Northwestern’s diverse intellectual environment. Our College staff consists of Beth Pardoe (Associate Faculty Chair) who is a vital resource in the Office of Fellowships and ready to meet up with you at the dining hall, and Judith (Hudi) Licht (Graduate Assistant) who does some amazing research on the brain and is always helping at our events. We are all looking forward to getting to know you very soon and meeting you in person at our various events.
If you have any questions about Shepard, Northwestern, the Middle East and North Africa, or about Chicago, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Welcome Class of 2029!
